Highlights - Steph and Terry

Stephanie and Terry were married on Saturday 5th April, 2008. It was a day that included a beautiful ceremony conducted by Pastor Murray Harris, held at St Columbus Uniting Church at Woollahra. The photo / video session in Martin Place was loads of fun with the team from Foto Expression.

The reception was held at The Palais in Leichhardt. The celebration included a tea ceremony, a performance by friends and some excellent speeches. The bridal waltz was a highlight, where the dancefloor lighting made for some beautiful footage.

We would like to thank Steph and Terry for having us as part of their day. The clip below is the highlights clip from their wedding video.

Highlights - Erin & Daniel

Erin and Daniel were married in a beautiful little sandstone church at Wilberforce. This was my first time at St John's Anglican. The reception was held at The Sebel at Windsor.

Erin and Daniel were a fun couple and I think that really comes across in their video.

Natalie and Marc's wedding took place on January 27th 2008. It was a truly spectacular event, put together by James Klein at @tmosphere.

The wedding took place at Central Synagogue, where Rabbi Wolff lead a beautiful ceremony filled with tradition, humour and music.

The fantastic music contniued into the night with the John Field band kicking things off with a high-energy Hora, but the highlight of the night was the performance by the special surprise guest entertainer - Marcia Hines.

Michelle and John's wedding was one of our first for 2008. Married on January 12th at St Charles of Borromeo Church in Ryde, with the reception held at one of our regular venues, Lauriston House at Dundas.

The photo and video session was at Gladesville in the surrounds of Banjo Patterson Cottage. It was our first opportunity to work with Gavin and Nathan from Cato & Pade photography. A great team that I would readily recommend.

Jayz Dance Concert 2007

One of my favourite events that we do annually is Jayz Dance Company's end of year concert. This is the third year that we have produced their concert DVD. I love doing weddings, but this is also a nice change :) The concert is great fun to film and edit - and the standard of dance at Jayz is always exceptional.

Jayz Dance Company has had the pleasure of employing DnM Video Productions to film our annual end of year concert for the past 3 years.

We are a dance school in Canberra with 300 Students. We found DnM on the internet and decided to ask them if they would film our concert. Dave and the guys come down every year for 2 days to film 2 different shows.

The ‘New Black’ in weddings …

It’s now 2007 and the hottest wedding necessity is a Professional Wedding Video.

Video production has come a long way from the 1980’s and 90’s. Gone are the days of tacky, over-the-top effects. Gone are the huge cameras and huge obtrusive lights. Today’s technology allows for cameramen to be discreet and unobtrusive in the way that they capture the most important day of your life.

And isn’t it the most important day of your life? Not only the day that you’ve dreamed of from the time you first discovered what a wedding is all about, the day that you have planned for so long … but the day that you will want to show to your kids in years to come.

Today, more brides are realising that video is a wedding essential – no longer a ‘wedding optional’. Video technology is developing exponentially and becoming intrinsically involved in our lives and lifestyle. As we head into the realms of online video streaming, video on ipods and mobile phones, plasma and LCD televisions and of course high definition - brides are seeing that the future is on video and DVD.

You may read some outdated lists that say you need to book video 3 to 6 months from your wedding date. Today, in Sydney, the best videographers are being booked between 9 and 12 months in advance. Start doing your research early and secure a great videographer to create your wedding memories.

So what should you look for?

Above all else, experience. In the same way that you wouldn’t trust your wedding photos to an amateur, find someone you can trust to get your video right. Aside from all of the technical aspects to making great video, experience also teaches anticipation. Knowledge of what will happen will enable your videographer to capture it in a clean and creative manner.

Look for the style that suits you. There are a multitude of video styles. The style that suits you might be natural and candid. It might be fun and interactive. It may be Documentary or Journalistic. Look at samples from different videographers to see what you like.

Look for a videographer using modern technology. Can your videographer put video online for you? Can your videographer film in widescreen, high definition? Is the audio clearly recorded?

A professional videographer will work seamlessly with your photographer. If you are concerned about mixing photo and video, go for a candid / unobtrusive style videographer who won’t interfere with what your photographer is doing.

Finally, price. In 2007 / 2008 – you can expect to pay between $2,500 and $10,000 for a high quality wedding video. You will find cheaper options which may include less within the video (eg: less hours of coverage, no highlights, only one camera). As with most things in life – you get what you pay for. Beware of cheap imitations!

Where do you find the best videographers?

- Go hunting online. Many videographers offer samples online.

- Look at professional association websites such as www.avpa.org.au

- Look at sites such as the ABIA awards website. These are awards voted by previous brides based on their experiences.

- Ask family / friends for referrals.

- Seek referrals from your reception venue, photographer, bridal websites / forums.

When you have found someone whose work you like – make an appointment to meet with them to discuss your day and your video.

5 reasons why a professional video is absolutely essential:

1) A professionally produced video will compliment your professional photos. Video is able to capture the sounds, motion and emotion of your day. Both photography and video are indispensable parts of your wedding-day team.

2) Your wedding day goes by very quickly. It is not possible to take in everything. Your videographer will capture the important moments as well as moments you didn’t see, so that you can relive the day again and again.

3) A professional videographer will have all the right equipment and expertise to make a DVD for you that will rival the quality of what you watch on television.

4) Future generations will thank you for it.

5) You won’t regret it. Take a look at some of the Internet forums – you will find countless stories of brides who regret that they didn’t have a wedding video. There are no stories of brides who regret having a video!

Wedding Video Tips

In my experience, there are a few factors that can beautifully enhance your wedding day … and some that can derail the best-laid plans. This post includes some tips that will help us to make a better video for you, as well as help your day run more smoothly.

I do not give this list as ‘rules’ – but offer it as helpful suggestions …

The Tips

1) Be on time!
It’s better to allow extra time and not need it, than to be running late.

If you keep to schedule, you will feel much more relaxed, you will be able to enjoy your day – and this will show in your video and photos.

2) Book a great photographer!
If you haven’t booked a photographer, please consider taking our recommendations. We work with different photographers all the time – and have no problem working with any of them.

However, there are some photographers who really compliment our style - and we find that the overall quality of both your photos and video will be improved by a good photographer / videographer relationship.

3) Don't get dressed yet!
Wait until after we arrive to get dressed! It makes for nice footage to have shots of the dress before you put it on, or footage of the boys getting ready.

4) Multiple photo shoot locations.
If time allows, plan for at least 2 locations for your photo / video shoot.

Having multiple locations gives an extra dimension to your video and photos. If possible – use different backgrounds, such as a leafy park, the harbour, sandstone etc.

5) First Dance
Dance the whole of the first dance without anyone else. It doesn’t matter if you can’t dance! Enjoy this moment – it’s just for the 2 of you! It also helps us to get the footage we need if you dance for a whole song.

6) It's Candid
Don’t pay too much attention to the camera. We’ll tell you if we specifically want you to look at the camera – otherwise, our natural filming style is to capture what’s going on. No need to ‘play’ to the camera.

7) Consider 2 cameramen.
If you haven’t booked a package with 2 cameramen – consider that 1+1 does not equal 2! In terms of wedding video, 2 cameramen will make the production 4 or 5 times better.

8) Pre-wedding
Consider including interviews or a pre-wedding shoot.

Including interviews / pre-wedding enhances the emotion and captures more about who the 2 of you really are. For future generations – nothing can say more about who you are now than you can!

We can also arrange to display your pre-wedding or even footage from your preparation and ceremony, just hours later at your reception! This has an incredible impact and is a great way to impress your guests. (This is called a 'Same Day Edit').

9) The Celebrant
Please inform the person conducting your ceremony that you will have a videographer. Some officiants have rules about where we can / can’t stand – it’s helpful to know this up front.

Similarly – encourage celebrant to use microphone / speaker. Plus for anyone reading / speaking.

10) Audio
We strive to capture the best audio possible. A couple of ways that you can assist us in capturing great audio are:

Ask your priest / minister / celebrant if they would (please) wear a radio microphone for your video. We will ask them on the day – but the request carries more ‘weight’ if it comes from you !

Use a lectern for your speeches. This enables us to put a radio microphone on the lectern to capture clean, clear audio of your speeches. This is far preferable to handing a wireless microphone all over the room. It also helps us get consistent video footage of the people speaking if they all come to one place.

Highlights - May & Shane

May and Shane's wedding was held on a rainy Sunday in August at All Saints Anglican church in Parramatta. Despite the damp conditions, we had a great day and were still able to get a few breaks in the weather.

The reception was held at L'Aqua (Cockle Bay) in their Gold Room. May did a fantastic job of designing the colours to suit the room, as it looked amazing.

The pinnacle of the night was May & Shane's bridal waltz, which started out as 'At Last' but broke into a fully choreographed routine to Michael Jackson's 'The Way You Make Me Feel'! It was very well done and had the guests clapping and cheering for more!

This week I was asked to write an article for Australian PC World Magazine. The editor asked for my top 5 tips for filming a wedding. My initial response was "Don't do it! Hire us to do it for you!" ... but I don't think that was quite what the editor was after, so I went with the tips below.

Top 5 tips for filming a wedding.

1. Be prepared: Don’t underestimate the value of planning! Speak with the couple to plan the events and timings for the day. Make sure you have planned your where, when and how to get there. I recommend building in a little ‘fat’ so that you’re not rushing too much and can allow for traffic or mishaps. (a GPS system will remove a lot of stress from your day!).

If you’re not familiar with the venues, you might attend the wedding rehearsal so that you can figure out your best vantage point for filming.

Make sure that everything is ready the night before and that all of your batteries are charged and you have plenty of tape!

Equally important is being able to fluctuate from the plan when necessary. Anticipate what’s about to happen and expect the unexpected!

2. Shoot plenty: Tape is cheap! Its better to have too much footage than too little. Always start a new tape at the start of the ceremony and speeches. You don’t want to miss any of the crucial moments.

3. Respect the occasion: Capture the moment, don’t become the focus of attention! Work with the celebrant, photographer and others featuring in the wedding day.

4. Audio – the forgotten element: There are many ways to capture audio. If your budget allows, use radio microphones and other audio recorders (such as mp3 recorders of mini-disc recorders) to capture audio as cleanly as possible. It’s common to put a radio microphone on the celebrant and / or the groom for the ceremony.

5. Equipment: There are 2 main factors which define ‘amateur video’. Make sure you avoid them! The first is shaky footage. The second is dark and grainy footage.

Whether you choose to use a tripod or some other stabilising device, your video will look much more professional if your footage is smooth and steady. A small light mounted to your camera’s accessory-shoe will help to improve your footage from dark locations (particularly for the reception).

If your camera, tripod, microphones, lighting etc are not up to par – consider hiring gear to supplement your equipment. Your clients will thank you for it!

I was back in the helicopter earlier this month shooting some more footage for Abigroup road projects. This time it was over Coffs Harbour and Brunswick Heads. On this trip I also employed the help of a couple of Gyrocams which made a big difference to the steadiness of the footage.

I want to send it to my friends and family in the US. You have finally captured what I have been trying to explain to them all these years as to what the JFB is all about. To add to that, you got the trombone in so many shots I finally feel that it was worth the extra money to buy a white coloured slide (ha).

I also had a look at your price list and wow, you certainly live up to your claim of being affordable because that must have taken voluminous hours to put those videos together. I also suspect somebody over there is a musician because those were great music beds to select and brilliant audio edits.

Sam & Ben - Highlights

Sam and Ben held their ceremony in a surprise location. Guests were told to meet at Circular Quay - but didn't know where they were headed. Water taxis delivered everyone to Shark Island on Sydney Harbour - for what was a very picturesque setting for the ceremony. Followed by a beautiful lunch at Cafe Sydney (I can highly recommend this place, it was great!) and a cocktail reception at Deep Blue Bistro in Coogee.

A Touching Story

You never know who you will impact or when. Let me tell you a true story. Four years ago I sent an unsolicited email to a potential bride. I know I was wrong and I don't do that sort of thing now - but that was then. The bride calls me to ask me to remove her from my email list - I was super friendly and apologetic - we actually talked for over an hour we clicked so well. She ended up coming in and booked us to cover her wedding. She loved all we did for her that day. We grew closer, her and her husband and me and mine became close - dinner, dancing, movies, bowling - friend stuff.

Two years later we asked them to be a part of our bridal party when Rob and I renewed our wedding vows and we had a big ole wedding.

Last year they had their first child a baby girl.

Today I get a call from my friends husband telling me that his wife is dying. She has about a week to ten days he says. They didn't tell anybody (friends) because she didn't want her friends to feel sorry for her and to watch her wither away - it all started about 3 months ago. Today I am told she asked for us.

Her husband in tears says "we value your friendship so much. I wouldn't trade it for the world. But it's what you did for us on our wedding day being our videographers that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Because of you, my daughter will see and know her mother. Because of the video I thought I could not afford, Olivia will hear her mothers voice. Her memories will be forged with your video".

My God, I lost it. Sometimes we get caught up in the business of being in business. Climbing ladders that don't matter, or trying to be at the top. Today I realized that what we do with video cannot be be measured with a price tag or a plaque on the wall. It's value is in the legacy's we protect everyday - and we don't even realize it.

My heart is breaking. But I know that what I did four years ago for a woman who didn't even want me emailing her, is the priceless gift she gave to her child.
